Savannah’s visitor hospitality industry began with the creation of this mile-long river walk, River Street and Rousakis Plaza in the 1970’s.  Before that the riverfront was no more than a muddy wharf with docks abandoned since the era of tall wooden ships.  Bob Gunn and Eric Meyerhoff convinced then Mayor John Rousakis to abandon plans for a series of parking lots and to build instead a place for people modelled after Copenhagen.  As a result, today over 14 million people per year visit River Street to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, fireworks and the mile of retail shops.  One of the first restaurants on this new River Street was HUEY’S, home to New Orleans-style cuisine and a perfect place for partying.  To this day one of the best places for breakfast, it looks out onto the giant container ships as they pass impossibly close by.
